Applications accepted from: All Persons Interested Service Line/Section: Houston Water/Drinking Water Operations Reporting Location: Various Locations* Workdays & Hours: Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 4:00pm* *Subject to change DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Houston Public Works is seeking candidates who can: • Perform moderately complex, skilled technical work in the design, installation, operation, maintenance and repair of data communications equipment and industrial control systems and instrumentation. • Design, evaluate and implement microprocessor-based control equipment. • Perform installation and maintenance of instrumentation and control appurtenances at water treatment facilities. • Diagnose data communication system failures: interfaces with vendors to resolve problems with various types of data communications facilities. • Evaluate process control equipment to make recommendations for improvement of performance; provides training for installation and operation of equipment. • Operate test equipment to isolate software/hardware circuits or cable related problems. • Repair and calibrate all components of process control and analytical systems; troubleshoots and repairs both digital and analog electronic equipment to the board level. WORKING CONDITIONS This position may involve considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on an occasional basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time. There are occasional exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. PHYSICAL SKILLRequires the ability to make closely coordinated eye/hand movements within very fine tolerance and/or calibration demands; or the ability to make rapid closely coordinated eye/hand movements on a patterned response space within somewhat fine tolerance demands; or the ability to make coordinated eye/hand movements within fine tolerances with large equipment as an extension of the worker. This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier I Level. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTSRequires an Associate’s degree (two-year program) in a computer science, instrumentation or electronics discipline or the equivalent, such as certification in a technical/specialty program of up to three years in duration EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSTwo (2) years of experience in the design, installation, operation, and/or maintenance of a computerized data communications network or industrial control system are required. Substitution: Relevant experience (as described above) may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis. LICENSE REQUIREMENTSDepending upon area of specialty -- may require a valid class "C" Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving. In the Public Works and Engineering Department, may require a valid class "C" or higher Texas Water or Wastewater Plant Operator's license. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in maintaining medium/low voltage systems, knowledge of electrical controls, or that hold an active Texas Electrical Journeyman License. **Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
